Closer look at the board

The board arrived in a well designed, highly attractive and protective box. The total package consists of
1) KX 18 Pro II board
2) Driver CD
3) 1x SATA power cable.
4) USB and Firewire connector headers
5) 1 x SATA and 3 x ATA cables
6) User manual
7) SATA Installation Manual

The KX 18D Pro II's overall layout was quite good, with the CPU and North bridge area having decent space around them to be fitted with high performance coolers. However Albatron have decided not to include mounting holes around the CPU socket, so certain high end coolers (Alpha) cannot be fitted. We installed the unit onto our Prometeia system so that we could try out some overclocking later on. Unfortunately it didn't occur to us to take pictures of the board before installing the system. The north bridge has been fitted with a fairy large heatsink and fan combo to provide the best possible cooling. Some may consider it to be a slightly overkill, nevertheless it more or less covers every angle.

The memory slots are color coded so that users can easily identify how to activate Dual Channel DDR in their systems. In order to enable Dual Channel you need to install one memory module in the purple slot and the other module in one of the green slots. (Picture shows one module already in place in a green memory slot)

The north bridge consists of a C1 revision NVIDIA nForce2 SPP (Ultra 400) chip, while the south bridge consists of a NVIDIA nForce2 MCP-T, which provides a wide array of in-built features such as integrated networking, IEEE-1394a/FireWire(R) support, up to six USB ports and an integrated audio processing unit (APU) providing support for Dolby(R) Digital 5.1 encoding.

The firewire and extra USB ports are enabled through the included connectors. The installation manual details out clearly how to get things running. I hope Albatron decides to include connectors that can be accessed from the front rather than having to reach behind your PC all the time to attach a USB or firewire device.

The Rear panel has been kept to the standard layout and there's nothing important to mention here. There's also space in the rear panel for any future expansion, which is currently closed by a plastic cover.
