Introduction

In line with our recent article on the NOVASONIC socket A cooler, it's quite apparent that providing good cooling to your system is very important. However so far all we have looked at or thought of is providing cooling while our systems are running; we never cared to think about what happens once the system is switched off. You might be proud that your system is running quite cool even under highly overclocked conditions, but have you ever considered what happens to the heat generated by all these components once the PC is switched off. They don't cool off within a matter of seconds in case you thought it does; especially if you run your system overclocked it'll take a lot longer for your PC to cool down completely. The heat generated by PC components once you shut down the machine may not cause harm to them immediately, however in the long run it'll undoubtedly have an impact on their life span.

This is where IOSS International comes into the picture. They have come up with a small device that keeps the cooling fans running even after the system is shut down. The principle of it is no different to a turbo timer in a car. A turbo timer keeps the engine fans running for a predetermined period of time giving time for the turbo to cool down gradually. The RD7-CA cooling after works just like that, it keeps the CPU fan plus another fan of your choice running for a pre-determined time period once you shut down the system.

What's in offer

The RD7-CA cooling after is a tiny little device spanning at a dimension of 50x32mm (with mounting tab, 50x52mm). One thing you'll be surprised to see however is the amount of cables that's provided with the device; IOSS has included this wide set of cables to ensure every possible fan connector type is met. The following is included in the package;

  • RD7-CA Cooling After
  • Velcro tape
  • 40cm Wake-On-Lan cable
  • 2x 3-pin to 3-pin fan connector
  • 40cm Molex Male to 3-pin fan adapter
  • 40cm Molex Female to 3-pin fan adapter
  • 6cm 3-pin to 2-pin LED adapter

Installation

Installation of the RD7-CA is pretty straight forward and all details are provided in the unit itself. The unit requires a WOL (Wake On LAN) connector as the main power source. The WOL connector is always powered through the Power supply so even after you shut down it's able to supply power to the unit. For users who do not have a WOL connector in their motherboards, IOSS also supplies a RD7-ATX connector which can be used to the same effect of a WOL connector.

The RD7-CA is able to support two 12v fans, so it's most likely that users will connect one to the CPU fan and the other to the GPU fan or Motherboard Northbridge fan.

The RD7-CA allows the user to determine the time period he wishes the unit to power the fans after system shut down. Easily removable jumpers allow us to change the length setting between 1, 3, 5 and 10 minute durations.
