XIGMATEK HDT-S963 in detail Cont'd The new 4 pin design is seen on newer mainboards, however it’ll work on older designs as well. The fan noise was within acceptable limits for us, however we wish XIGMATEK includes a fan controller with future releases of this model. The fan is connected to the aluminum heatsink by 4 rubber mounts mitigating any vibration that might cause during operation. This results in lesser overall noise.
The heatsink component of the HDT S963 is made of 42 thin aluminum fins through which the copper heat pipes go through. The Aluminum fins are thin enough to dissipate heat effectively yet quite strong, so overall it’s very well constructed.
A feature I had not seen in past coolers we have reviewed is XIGMATEK’s inclusion of a spoiler with this cooler. Now there seems to be two ways you can use the spoiler, from what I can understand XIGMATEK intended the spoiler to direct the air upwards away from any components; basically driving the hot air blown out from the fan directly upwards. There are grooves on the heat sink fins which allow easy attachment of the Spoiler onto it.
However you can also install the spoiler so that the air blows towards to components surrounding the CPU socket; namely Capacitors etc. Where you place the Spoiler is up to you to decide, but we recommend using the spoiler the way XIGMATEK intended as this drives the hot air out of the CPU area rather than blowing is back in.
