Pump up that Bass
There's no standard testing rig here to test out the speakers. We
simply used some standard DVD's and audio CD's which we use for testing
speaker systems out. We used a few instrumental, techno, dance, rock,
which pretty much covers all aspects of audio lovers. First I started
out with "Tears in Heaven" by Eric Clapton and Hotel California,
since both of these songs have good instrumental content where by
you can clearly identify if the speakers are of high quality or not.
Oh boy…what can I say, the music was much more than what I had expected.
It's truly amazing what Jazz speakers have been able to achieve by
mere 3" drivers. The highs were just right, with perfect mid
range and bass. I had to set the bass to minus levels since the sub
produced very deep bass, too much in fact. The reproduction guitar
strokes were awesome, and the clarity was almost equivalent to high-end
audio systems.
Next I got hold of a few dance songs such as "Julie" by Shaggy and "It's OK" by Atomic Kitten. Here too the speakers excelled in almost every aspect. I wish Jazz speakers had included a treble control as well since there were times where I wish I had a little more treble at hand. Nevertheless these speakers seem to have been built for dance albums as they work like a charm. I increased the volume to its maximum, from windows volume control to the unit's volume control. The speakers didn't distort once, and continued without any problem. The power of the sub is very evident when playing dance mixes; it felt as if the sub could simply bring the whole house down. If you have any troublesome neighbors, this is a perfect way to get on their nerves:)
Next we decided to test the speakers out on a gaming environment. So we hooked up a Xbox to the PC and since the Xbox supports 5.1 surround sound we simply connecyed everything up directly. Now this was an experience I think I'll cherish for the rest of my life. We loaded up HALO and the game play was so intense, words cannot express how good it was. The 5.1 surround sound was working with perfect synchronization; you could hear an alien sneaking up behind you from the left rear speaker and at the same time hear gun fire coming from the front right speaker. When a space ship moves around you, you can clearly distinguish the sound changing from one speaker to the other giving a very realistic feel, just like in the movies. Explosions sent tremors through your body, and it shook everything in the room with incredible force. This was certainly the best gaming experience I ever had; it's amazing how a set of speakers can make such a deep impact.
No speaker system is fully tested out if we do not check out some DVD movies. So I decided to try out my favorite movie, the Matrix. It was absolutely flawless. You could hear the main action coming through the front speakers while the rear speakers filled the room with background noise. Dialogues were pumped mainly through the center channel and the sub just kept thumping away. It's a very fascinating experience no doubt. I have listened to quite a few heavy duty home theatre systems, and I must admit the overall effect we got from this system was quite close to them. Best of all, these speakers come at half the cost of an expensive home entertainment system.
After using the Jazz J9940 speaker system for a few weeks now I'm completely drawn to these speakers. Of course a price tag of around US$380 doesn't make these the ideal choice for every audio enthusiast. It's a specialized product and if you wish to experience it, you must be willing to spend a few extra bucks. If your interests are diverse and not just limited to gaming, I would certainly recommend going for this system if you can afford it. It comes with a truck load of power and also able to deliver that power very effectively. So what more can you ask for. Clarity of sound is something everyone looks for in a good system, and the J9940 offers this with hardly any compromise at all.
The system is not very portable, so if you plan on taking them to your LANs, forget it. If you do buy these speakers, I would recommend spending a few extra for a DD decoder to get the most out of these speakers. Australian buyers can purchase one of these systems from Dick smith Electronics or Harvey Norman according to Jazz speakers. This is a solid investment which you'll not regret for a second. Of course for a couple of hundred dollars more you can go for Jazz speakers newest arrival the J9940W which as we stated at the start includes wireless speakers and all the decoding options you'll need. If you don't plan on spending $1100 on the J9940W system, then the J9940 is one of the next best choices currently out in the market which is hard to beat in terms of price and performance.
